Airbnb to Launch Its Own AI Travel Agent in First Half of 2027
Airbnb says its AI travel agent will launch in the first half of 2027, with a visual interface instead of a chatbot. Here's what it will do and why.
Key points
- Airbnb said in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter that its AI travel agent will launch to consumers in the first half of 2027.
- The agent will help guests plan trips, compare options, manage bookings and get support during their stay.
- Instead of replying with text, it will build a visual interface from hundreds of travel-specific components such as maps, calendars and itineraries.
- CEO Brian Chesky argues general-purpose AI agents are not the best fit for travel planning.
- Airbnb reported third-quarter revenue of $4.87 billion, up 19% year over year, and raised its 2026 growth forecast.
Airbnb has put a date on its AI travel agent. In its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, released on November 5, the company said the agent will launch to consumers in the first half of 2027, a firmer timeline than its earlier promise of “sometime in the next year.”
What Airbnb announced
According to Airbnb’s description, reported by TechCrunch, the agent is meant to cover the whole trip, not just the search. It will help travellers plan, compare options, and manage bookings, and it will stay involved during the stay itself.
That includes practical support tasks: changing reservations, resolving payment problems, handling refunds and rebooking, and providing round-the-clock safety support. Over time, Airbnb plans to extend the agent beyond homes and hotels to its services and experiences.
The company says the agent will draw on nearly two decades of data about how guests book and how hosts host.
Not another chatbot
The most unusual part of Airbnb’s plan is the interface. Rather than answering in paragraphs of text, the agent will build a screen around each question. Airbnb says it will pull from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface pieces, such as maps, photos, side-by-side comparisons, calendars and itineraries, and assemble them in real time.
Chief executive Brian Chesky said the result will feel a bit like generative UI, where the layout itself is created on the fly to match what the user is asking.
Why Airbnb is building its own agent
Chesky has been clear that he does not think one general-purpose AI assistant will handle everything. On the earnings call, he said today’s popular agents are good at simple, routine jobs like booking a restaurant table or scheduling an appointment, but that trip planning is different.
He pointed to a statistic that around 80% of travellers enjoy researching trips. In his view, a travel agent should keep the inspiration and browsing that people like, rather than replacing it with a plain text conversation.
That stance contrasts with the approach of companies like Uber, which is working with outside assistants. Uber’s latest numbers also show how early this market is: the company said only four rides were booked through AI agents in its busiest October week.
AI is already part of Airbnb’s business
The agent builds on AI features Airbnb has been adding throughout 2026. In its second-quarter shareholder letter, the company said its AI customer support assistant was available in more than 50 languages and was resolving nearly 45% of the issues that started with it without a human agent. Airbnb also said customer support costs per booking fell about 16% year over year in that quarter, partly because of the assistant.
The company has also added AI-generated listing and review highlights and AI tools that help hosts create listings and understand pricing.
Strong quarter behind the announcement
The timeline came alongside solid results. Airbnb said third-quarter revenue grew 19% year over year to $4.87 billion, ahead of Wall Street estimates, and Chesky described it as the company’s fastest revenue growth in more than three years. Airbnb also raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens, up from the mid-teens.
What happens next
Airbnb has not given an exact launch date within the first half of 2027, or said which markets will get the agent first. The key questions will be whether travellers actually prefer an agent to Airbnb’s existing app, and whether a visual, travel-specific agent can win users from general-purpose assistants offered by the major AI labs.
